Sarcasm’s stage: The Avalon hosts a comical legend

Grand Junction is drawing in big talent and stand-up comedian Brian Regan came to the Avalon Theater in Grand Junction on Thursday, March 29. He is commonly referred to as a “universal” comedian because of his bright, quick taste and lack of vulgarity or profanity in his shows. The tickets ran slightly higher than most events the Avalon holds, at $55 a piece, but the shows nearly sold out audience proved to be a devoted set of fans. In between jokes, requests could be heard throughout the venue as people called out their favorites from past shows.

“I am just honored anyone knows any of my stuff,” Regan said. “You all must not have too many funny friends if you are spending your Thursday night here.”

Regan focuses on sarcasm and some self-deprecating jokes. He tells stories from his awkward childhood and finds hilarity in simple acts like purchasing a refrigerator.

CMU student Lee Hinton attended the event through local radio station Mix 104.3, where he is interning. Hinton was excited prior to the event and was hardly let down by the performance.

“I thought it was hilarious,” Hinton said. “I have watched his shows before and I really enjoy his sarcasm. He has a really funny outlook on day to day occurrences that really make you find humor in your own life.”

Hinton won his tickets and avoided the high price.

“I really wanted to go and would have at least looked into going otherwise,” Hinton said. “I was really grateful for the opportunity to go for free. I have seen other comedians in the past and Regan was far and away the best show.”

Hinton said his favorite joke of the evening was a crack Regan made about the origin of dancing.

“Do you think people decided one day, ‘Think we should stand like this,’” Regan said.

He raced across the stage moving spastically to prove his point. He flopped across the stage making extreme movements and noises. It is hard to forget the quick wit of his words that take something like dancing and make it into a spectacle of comedy.

Regan is continuing his tour through September in various locations throughout the U.S.
