Open mic night: Teeming with talent

Last week, Another Level Collaboration, a CMU club, hosted an Open Mic Night. After a last minute decision to move outside the University Center the event was a success.

“We want to promote students who perform poetry, comedy, or music,” club President, Roy Varley said.

Some performers played original songs that they had written and others just played covers. According to Varley, mostly acoustic music appears at events like this, but instruments ranged from guitars to a ukulele and one performer even played a harmonica.

“It gives the opportunity to start somewhere,” performer Stefine Mraule said. “I use it to get my confidence up.”

Mraule said that she will try out for The Voice in the near future, and used this experience to practice in front of people.

ALC puts on Open Mic Nights as one musical outlet, but they also assign musicians to events, such as playing for local businesses.

When the event started, only a handful of listeners attended, but at the end there were over 45 people. There were so many performers that ALC had to limit each performer down to one song.

“The joy is meeting lots of different types of people,” Varley said. “(Mraule is a swimmer) and she still makes time out of her schedule for this.”

The decision to host the event outside paid off well for the club. As students walked by on their way to or from the University Center they paused and listened to the music. Many students ended up staying for quite a while. The event was supposed to end at 8 p.m. but so many people were still there that they continued to let people perform.

Last semester, ALC coordinated a few Open Mic Nights. They would like to do many more in the future, but have none planned at the moment. For more information about ALC contact Roy Varley at Rvarley@mavs.coloradomesa.edu.
