After a 20-run game against Mines last weekend, The CMU baseball team (19-7, 13-3 RMAC) used legs instead of bats to steal a record 12 bases on their way to a four-game sweep of Regis University at Canyon View Park.

The Mavs jumped on the board early, scoring two runs in the first inning. Regis tied the score in the fourth, but the Mavs scored one in the bottom of the frame and four in the fifth inning to pull away 7-2.

Braden Box led the way offensively for the Mavs, going 3-4 with two runs scored, a stolen base and an RBI. Dustin Fackrell finished 2-3 with two RBI’s. Jeremy Ortiz pitched in the ninth, allowing one hit and striking out two to seal the 7-2 win for the Mavs.

Nolan Snell pitched eight complete innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out eight to earn the win.

“We always feel good getting game one,” coach Chris Hanks said. “We expect to battle tomorrow, so it will really come down to executing the little things.”

Game one of the Saturday’s doubleheader turned out to be a pitcher’s duel with CMU starter Jared Christensen throwing a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits and striking out four in a 1-0 win in eight innings. The score was knotted at 0-0 going into the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded, Mitch Corwin hit a single to deep left-center and brought in the winning run for the Mavs. Corwin finished the game 2-3 with the lone RBI and Justin Rosales scored the only run for the Mavs while going 1-2.

In Saturday’s second game,  the Mavs swiped a school record 12 bases en route to a 13-4 win. Dylan Evans got the start for CMU. Despite not allowing a hit through his first three innings of work, Evans ran into some trouble in the fourth, giving up four runs on five hits and allowing Regis to tie the game at four.

In the bottom of the inning, Bobby Cozine put the Mavs back on top with a homerun to deep left field as CMU added two more runs in the inning to go up 7-4. The Mavs would add six more runs in the sixth inning before Derek Benham came in and struck out all three batters he faced in the seventh inning.

Cozine went 4-4 with two RBI’s and a run scored. Pitcher Dakota Bear, who relieved Evans, picked up the win, going 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and striking out one.

In the final game of the series, the Mavs used six pitchers and committed three errors but came out with the 9-8 win, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the ninth off a wild pitch. Regis led for most of the game but the Mavs tied the game in the seventh. Tim Moore picked up the win going 2 innings while striking out one and not allowing a hit. Rosales and Fackrell each had two hits along with two RBI’s and Braden Box went 1-2 with three walks and three runs scored, including the final run for the Mavs.

“We tried to have a lock in attitude,” Box said. “It’s really been a tough day so I had to stay in every pitch. We’re really rolling along now and that consistency is really paying off.”

The Mavs will take on New Mexico Highlands this weekend before returning home to take on RMAC foe Nebraska-Kearney.
