It’s Manning Time

Tim Tebow couldn’t stay out of the news. Just when I had gotten over my Tebowmania hangover, he’s back to being the only thing I hear about. I’m now subject to hearing all about how the Denver Broncos wronged him when they signed quarterback Peyton Manning. I’m constantly reminded of how two-faced John Elway is because he went and got a veteran quarterback who has a mile-long list of records and achievements. I have to read Facebook statuses about how much everyone loves Tim Tebow and how they’ll cheer for him wherever he goes.

Give me a break.

Instead, Tebow signed with the New York Jets, where he’ll compete against Mark Sanchez for the starting quarterback job. The only thing Sanchez has going for him is that he’s good looking. Tebow will learn nothing under Sanchez, and everyone should agree, Tebow needs to learn a lot before he can become a top tier quarterback.

Tebow is making the biggest mistake of his career. He led the Broncos to an 8-8 record and won a playoff game, but by no means is he ready to be a starting quarterback. The AFC West was the weakest division in the NFL. The best thing he could do is stay in Denver for the next year and back up Manning. Tebow could learn the game from one of the best quarterbacks to play the game. He could learn how to read his assignments from the pocket, instead of deciding where he’s going to throw before the snap. Give Tebow one year under Manning and he’ll improve drastically, give him two years and he’ll be able to win playoff games and maybe even a Super Bowl.

Broncos fans should be thrilled that Manning signed with the Broncos. We had to sit through the Brian Griese experiment. We had to witness Jake Plummer and his disgusting beard. We listened to Jay Cutler whine after every single game. We sat by and watched Josh McDaniels dismantle the team. We debated whether Kyle Orton or Tebow should get to start. We were rewarded with winning the division and finally getting a playoff win.

Is that what we’re settling for?

With Manning we have a legitimate chance to win games, including the big one. Yes, he has a bad neck, but for Tebow that means he’ll get more playing time when Manning needs a break.

I understand that going from a starter to riding the bench isn’t ideal. If I was in his situation, I’d want to bail, too. But for someone who constantly talks about doing whatever it takes to get better and to win, this is your best opportunity. I’m sure he was hurt when Elway said that he’d do whatever it took to sign Manning after declaring Tebow the long-term quarterback for the Broncos. Tebow would have learned more from Manning than from a mediocre group of players who watch the playoffs from their couches.

Elway is just doing what he needs to for the Broncos to win. As much as I love Tebow, he’s not the answer. Give Manning a chance, and watch Tebow crash and burn in New York.
