The Maverick women’s lacrosse team started its sophomore season with three losses, but got back to winning this weekend at home with a 16-9 win against Adams State.

After having their original Friday night game rescheduled, the Mavericks (1-3, 1-2 WILA) took on the Adams State Grizzlies (0-1, 0-1 WILA) on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Walker Field.

CMU wasted no time getting on the board. Less than a minute into the game, the Mavericks scored two goals by Tayler Lansdown and Lexie Chavez.

Rachael Sutton followed with two goals in under a minute and gave the Mavs a 5-2 lead. Sutton scored four goals on nine attempts.

“I feel I played well, but I wouldn’t say I played a perfect game.” Sutton said. “There are things I still need to work on, but I would say it was my strongest game so far.”

Sutton wasn’t the only Maverick to rack up points. Chavez and Amanda Simon scored three goals each, and freshman Allie Henderson scored two goals in the 16-9 victory.

Despite picking up a win, the Mavericks were not pleased with the game’s atmosphere playing against an aggressive Grizzlies squad.

“It was a tough game in regards to how unclassy they play,” Wells said. “It is hard to be the bigger team and not stoop to their level. I’m not trying to sound negative but I do not enjoy playing them.”

The Mavs won their first game of the season, but coach Abigail Simpson knows they have room to improve in a 14 game season.

“We have to watch out for the fouling,” Simpson said. “Defense had a great game, and attack played well, we just got to keep watching out for those fouls.”

The Mavericks travel to Painesville, Ohio this week to take on Lake Erie College, and will be back at home on March 24 to take on Fort Lewis.
