Snell throws shutout, Mavs roll in RMAC play


RMAC play began this weekend. The CMU baseball team (8-4, 3-1 RMAC) traveled to Metro State for a weekend faceoff against the Roadrunners, where they won three out of four games. The Mavs won Saturday’s games 4-0 and 6-4, and split Sunday’s doubleheader with a 5-3 loss, followed by a 13-0 blowout.

Nolan Snell took the mound in Saturday’s first game. He allowed four hits, three walks and struck out eight in a complete game shutout, bringing his record to 3-0 with a 2.33 ERA.

“I felt really good,” Snell said. “I had command of the strike zone with all my pitches and was challenging the hitters.”

However, the Mavs failed to provide Snell with run support and went into the ninth with a 1-0 lead. But they scored three runs in the top of the ninth and sealed the 4-0 victory.

Dustin Fackrell finished the game 3-5 with an RBI, and Bobby Cozine went 2-3.

In Saturday’s second game, Dylan Evans went five complete innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out four. Metro State took the lead early, scoring two runs in the first and one in the second inning, but the Mavs answered in the fourth, scoring three runs to tie the game and taking the lead in the fifth by adding another three runs on three hits.

Derek Benham picked up his third save of the season. Justin Rosales had the hot bat for the Mavs, going 2-3 with a double, three RBI’s and two runs. Colton Schoelkopf went 1-2 with a two-run single.

In Sunday’s first game, the Mavs outhit Metro State, but committed four errors, and lost 5-3. Garrett Carpenter took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits, striking out six batters in his five innings of work.

Fackrell had two hits in four at-bats and picked up an RBI off a single to right field. Tamatoa Demello went 1-2.

In the last game of the series, the Mavs used a nine-run first inning to blow out Metro 13-0. In the inning Colton Little and Braden Box both singled to right field to drive in two runs. Nate Robertson and Sergio Valenzuela also brought in a run each, and Kozel chipped in with an RBI single. CMU would add one in the third and three more in the fifth.

Starting pitcher Jared Christensen got the win, giving up three hits and striking out one in five innings. Little went 3-5 and finished with three RBI’s and two runs. Popick went 3-5 with two RBI’s and a run scored.

The Mavs travel to Pueblo this weekend in a four-game series against the CSU-Pueblo.
