Attitudes amped: Fitness program acts as motivation

The Maverick Center fitness program, New Attitudes, is entering its second year to help people lose weight.

New Attitudes, a six week program, teaches people different exercise techniques and how to eat healthier. Participants decide what they want to do with help from a packet they receive the first meeting.

“Everybody gets a fitness measurement before the program, calculating the body fat, then towards the end we measure again to see who wins,” said program founder Sue Graham.

Graham teaches students how to make walking or running around the track more entertaining.

“They can invite family and friends, so that they can have fun, kind of like a play date,” Graham said. “I also like to give them ideas on what they could do on a track, things that can just spark their imagination.”

For six weeks, students are encouraged to continue working out. Student Charley Lickliter set personal goals, including a reward if she accomplishes it.

“I would like to lose about 10 pounds and become aware of my serving size and calorie intake,” Lickliter said.

During the time students are on their own, they are contacted by their trainer and Graham through email at least twice. The trainers who help out with the program are students who want to become trainers.

The program is also a way for kids who are less fortunate and don’t have enough food. Half of the registration fees goes to the “Backpack” program, and provides food to kids who do not have much to eat. For more information on the program visit http://kidsaidcolorado.org/backpack.html.
