Women’s basketball earns No. 8 seed in RMAC Shootout

Win the turnover battle, win the game.

It’s a simple concept that the CMU women’s basketball team keyed in on Friday night in its 66-61 win over Adams State. However, the Mavs committed 23 turnovers against Ft. Lewis on Saturday, losing 92-57.

CMU earned the No. 8 seed in the RMAC tournament.

“We knew we had to at least win one of the games to be safely locked into the RMAC shootout,” Katrina Selsor said. “We thought that would put us higher than eighth.”

The  Mavericks hit the road for the last two games of their regular season after coming off of an exciting win at Brownson Arena, beating Western State College by one point in overtime. The first half of the road trip would take the Mavericks to Alamosa Friday night to face the Adams State Grizzlies (7-18, 6-15 RMAC).

Selsor led the Mavs with 17 points for the Mavs. Both Kelsey Sigl and Leanndra Gilbert added ten points.

“We came out slow in the beginning, and some girls got in foul trouble,” Selsor said. “But down the stretch we hit a few big shots, and got stops on the defensive end. We played really well as a team and got it done when it really counted.”

On Saturday, the Mavs failed to keep possession, committing 23 turnovers that led to 19 points in a 92-57 loss against Fort Lewis.

“Saturday night we didn’t play our game at all,” Selsor said. “We came out and turned the ball over way too many times and got down by so much that we couldn’t come back. In the second half we played better .”

With a win over Adams, the Mavs made it into the 2012 RMAC shootout. The Mavs are the No. 8 seed and will face the No. 1 seed Metro State (24-2, 20-2 RMAC) on the road on Feb. 28 at 5 p.m.
