Media Day showcases photography

Photography is the theme of the 22nd annual Media Day at 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Monday, March 5. Most events will be held on the second floor of the University Center and some will be on the third floor of the Fine Arts Building.

“Professor Byron Evers started Media Day because he wanted to give back to CMU and high schools in western Colorado,” Mass Communication Associate Professor Dan Flenniken said. “Media Day is not a national event, but there are some colleges and universities that have something similar.”

All CMU and area high school students can compete in the photography contest during Media Day. Photos must be family-friendly and between the dimensions of 5×7 and 24×36. Participants register for the contest the morning of the event. Awards from Snap Photo and Gene Taylor’s will be given to the winners. Students must pick up their photos after the 2 p.m. ceremony.

Mass Communication graduate Waylon Ron Jordan will present archival footage from the 1930-70s by his grandfather, former Daily Sentinel Photography Editor Bob Grant.

Mass Communication Lecturer Stevan Maxwell and local nonprofit homeless shelter HomewardBound will work to break stereotypes of the homeless through a joint multimedia exhibit.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. Tours of the Mass Communication Department and student media will be held throughout the day.

The keynote speaker, Casey Cass, is a former photo editor for “The Criterion.” His works have been featured in national publications, including “USA Today” and “The New York Times.” His multi-media presentation focuses on technological advances in photojournalism.

There will also be speakers and workshops throughout the day covering emerging media, social media, advertising, radio and a panel discussion by the newly established Society of Professional Journalists chapter. There will also be panels moderated by student media leaders.

Professor Evers has seen Media Day grow substantially since it started in 1990.

“Media Day is what it is today because of the combined effort of students, staff and professionals,” Evers said. “I appreciate all the hard work.”
