Mavs sweep four-game series vs. CSU-P

There’s no better feeling than sweeping a conference opponent.

The CMU softball team (6-2, 4-0 RMAC) did exactly that, sweeping the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves 5-4, 14-6, 3-0 and 9-6.

In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Mavs were able to squeak by with a 5-4 win. CMU scattered five hits throughout the game. In the top of the seventh, Pueblo went on a hitting spree, compiling four runs but came up short in a 5-4 Maverick victory.

Junior pitcher Catherine Floyd allowed four runs off nine hits.

In game two, the Mavs’ bats exploded for 14 runs, including four in the first inning. Junior Jessica Albertson was 4-5 at the plate. The Mavs were able to score in every inning besides the third, en route to a 14-6 win in six innings.

In Sunday’s first game, neither team scored until the bottom of the fourth. Junior Jessica Albertson managed to get on base with a bunt down the third-base line. Danielle Vallie then hit over the shortstop, scoring Albertson. The Mavs held on for a 3-0 win.

Ashley Pulido earned the win, shutting out the T-Wolves. The Mavs scored three runs off of six hits.

“Ashley was really good today,” coach Kris Mort said. “Her curve ball was really moving and both umpires were calling a good corner for her. Even though they knew it was coming they couldn’t make the adjustments they needed to make to hit that curveball.”

The final game of the series started off differently for the Mavericks. Pueblo was able to score in the first off an error. Taylor Gross answered with a double to middle-left. With the bases loaded, Courtney Maihi hit a bases-clearing triple. Next up to bat, Megan Smith hit a homerun, scoring Maihi.

In the third, the T-Wolves managed to score with a base hit past the pitcher setting the score at 5-3. After going scoreless for two innings, the Mavs scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth. CMU left the bases loaded in the fifth, while Pueblo managed to hit two homeruns making the score 9-5. The Mavs won 9-6 with nine run off 11 hits and two errors. Pulido picked up another win and the save.

“My fielders played amazing,” Pulido said. “It helps you motivate yourself to do well on every batter.”
