Mavs open home season with 10-3 victory

Using a five goal fourth quarter, the CMU men’s lacrosse team notched a 10-3 win against Adams State on Saturday.

The Mavs got on the board first with Aaron Eggiman’s goal four minutes into the game. At the end of the first quarter, Trace Wollner also scored, putting the Mavs up 2-1.

The Grizzles tied the game 2-2 with 5:55 to go in the second quarter, but just two minutes later Dillon Bernad had an answer for the Mavs, giving them a 3-2 lead at halftime.

CMU picked up the intensity in the second half with back-to-back goals by Kade Robinson in just over a minute. Adams State responded with a goal, bringing the score to 5-3, but the Mavs pulled away in the final 15 minutes.

“We all just put our heads down and went for it,” Robinson said. “We knew we needed to.”

The Mavs scored five goals in the first seven minutes of the quarter, the first from Austin Pridham 32 seconds in. James Sharp added another goal minutes later as he weaved through the defense and finished with a behind-the-back shot just in front of the crease, putting CMU up 7-3. Wollner added another goal and Pridham scored two more goals before the final horn.

“In the fourth quarter we really stepped it up,” coach AJ. Stevens said. “That quarter is really going to show you how we’re going to play this year.”

Pridham finished with a game-high three goals on four shots and scooped up three groundballs. Robinson and Wollner chipped in with two goals each.

Midfielder Thomas Spain went 8-16 on faceoffs. Brad Brandenburg and Zach Weaver split time in goal with each player making four saves and Brandenburg picking up the decision. Both held the Grizzles to three goals.

“Both our goalies played excellent today,” Stevens said. “I would say they were our two top players. They took a ton of shots and both of them did very well.”

The Mavs will be back in action on Mar. 6 as they take on Le Moyne College at Walker Field.
