Students take on ambitious musical

The CMU Theater Department will enthrall audiences with their spring production, “Crazy For You” on Feb. 23.

The musical takes place in a small Nevada mining town during the 1930s. The hero Bobby Child, played by CMU junior Matthew Corbett, is a man who goes against his mothers will in order to follow his dream and dance.

The play was originally written by Ira and George Gershwin and has been very successful in the past. It has had 1,622 performances at the Shubert Theatre on Broadway and won several awards including three Tony Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, and two Drama Desk Awards. Corbett explained that it is a very ambitious musical.

“It’s a very challenging show for both the performers and tech crew,” Corbett said. “As students we have the talent base for it.”

The show will have multiple two-story sets that weigh about 1,000 pounds each and six or sevens props that weigh over 500 pounds including an old fashioned car. Corbett’s favorite scene in Act I, “Can’t Be Bothered Now,” includes a segment where Corbett tab dances on top of the car.

“There’s more dancing in this show and lots of music, so everyone has to be on their game,” Corbett said. “There’s a lot of tap dancing.”

The show crew has been working on the show for the entire semester and because of late casting did not know their roles until the Sunday before they got to work.

“Crazy For You” will be the third play this year following Connie Ray and Alan Bailey’s “Smoke on the Mountain” and Shakespeare’s “Comedy of Errors.”

“They [the audience] will be astounded,” Corbett said. “It’s a spectacle that they have never seen here before.”

The musical will run from Feb. 23-25 and Feb. 29- Mar. 3 at 7:30 p.m. with matinee performances on Feb. 26 and Mar. 4. Tickets can be purchased at the Moss Performing Arts Center box office at $6 for students, $15 for seniors, faculty and staff and $20 for adults.
