“Memes” on the rise: Internet trend hits CMU

CMU is the latest subject of a fad that has been taking the school, along with the rest of the country, by storm. There are no traces of it around any parts of campus or Grand Junction, but Facebook is covered with its aftermath and a variety of photos or cartoons with different amusing captions headlining them. These Photoshop comic strips are known as “memes.” Memes allow the opportunity to take any image, add a clever or catchy response to it, and make it viral.

On Feb. 14, CMU Senior James Redmond decided to bring the phenomena to campus and started a memes page specifically for the university. The Mass Communications major from Salida took an interest in the amusing trend.

Redmond explains that he spotted the trend early on and thought the students at CMU would enjoy its humor.

“I saw that other universities in the state were doing it and I wanted to bring something similar here,” Redmond said. “Since Mesa is smaller than the other schools participating in it, I thought that students would appreciate it more.”

Since its inception, the page has nearly 200 followers and over 30 memes, each relating to situations that happen commonly in the educational or social life of students here. Subjects like homework, hipsters, fraternities, Californians, and many more have all been showcased on the memes page for any student who joins.

“What makes it interesting is the shared experience,” Redmond said. “When people see something that they can relate to, it makes it much funnier.”

Unlike most user created pages that discourage contributions, student participation is highly encouraged. While there is little room for expansion, Redmond plans to post the photos on the social media site Tumblr along with continuing the Facebook page. Anyone who has the capabilities to create a meme has full support to upload and share it with all followers.

“I want to give students here a venue where they would be able to share the joke with everyone,” Redmond said. “The only thing I can hope for now is for people to tell their friends about it and add their own memes.”
