“The Vow” reminds us why we love sappy chick-flicks

Every girl loves a sappy and romantic chick-flick. So I’m sure when girls saw the preview for “The Vow” they labeled it as an instant must see.

Paige (Rachel McAdams) and Leo (Channing Tatum) both play amazing roles that are derived from the true story of a couple in New Mexico. “The Vow” immediately starts off grabbing your attention and drawing you in when main character, Paige loses all of her memory in a tragic car accident.

Paige and Leo, a married couple who were once madly in love, must now overcome all obstacles in their course to try and rekindle what was once there. Leo struggles to gain any affection back from Paige, who is still very disgruntled about her memory loss. She doesn’t feel at ease having a life with Leo, who she has no memory of or recollection of ever meeting.

“The Vow” is filled with plenty of emotion and eye-opening situations of how life would be if you couldn’t remember the last five years of your life. Unfortunately, for Paige, those last five years of her life were the happiest of her life, spent married to Leo, whom she completely adored.

One thing that bothered me about this film was the amplification of drama. There was too much going on with the interaction between Paige and other characters that I became sidetracked. Paige’s last memory was with her ex-fiancé, Jeremy (Scott Speedman), she had no memory of ever breaking it off with him and thus there was still chemistry between the two. This lead to drama between Paige and Leo, her ex-fiancé and her family. These issues were okay to mention in the film, but they should have been little bumps in the road, carried on for way too long that it turned into a distraction. I would have liked to see more aimed at the couple alone and not everyone else involved.

As this movie worked its way towards the end, I had a whole different idea of what “The Vow” was going to be like. “The Vow” is a Hollywood film so there will be exaggeration in the drama. But I was still disappointed that I didn’t get to see the film as previews made it out to be. I wanted to see more about how Leo was able to make Paige fall so madly in love with him again and less about the drama between Paige and other characters. I would definitely see “The Vow” again because it truly is a great movie with tons of excitement and heart-throbbing moments. However, this doesn’t change the unnecessary drama.
