The CMU Speakers Bureau will host former U.S. Sen. Alan Simpson of Wyoming as its first speaker at noon Feb. 20 in the University Center Ballroom.

Simpson was a republican senator for 18 years. He was co-chair of the Simpson-Bowles commission created by President Obama. The commission’s charge was to develop ways to decrease the national deficit. Their plan was not approved, but is still being discussed in Washington.

At the Speakers Bureau luncheon, Simpson will speak about his experiences in politics, as well as other topics.

“We chose Alan Simpson because he is one of the most influential and dynamic individuals of our time,” CMU Director of Media Relations Dana Nunn said. “He understands state, national and international interests.”

CMU Director of Development Peggy Lamm said that Alan Simpson is a speaker worth hearing. Like Simpson, Lamm was involved in politics for many years. She was part of several boards and commissions. In 2006, she was a candidate for Colorado’s Seventh Congressional District, but she lost at the democratic primary.

“Alan is as smart as a whip,” Lamm said. “He definitely knows what he is talking about. He is also entertaining and inspiring.”

The Speakers Bureau wants to host two speakers per year. They are currently discussing what speaker to bring next to CMU.

“We want a variety of speakers to talk about a broad range of topics,” Lamm said. “Authors, athletes and individuals from all walks of life are welcome here. Diverse individuals will give the community an opportunity to know what’s going on in our world and to be challenged by other viewpoints,” Lamm said.

Tickets for the luncheon are $50 each and $750 for a table sponsorship. Proceeds will help fund future speakers. For more information and to purchase tickets, go to www.coloradomesa.edu/speakersbureau or call the Foundation Office at 248-1902.
