GOP contender Mitt Romney gave a speech at the Country Inn on Horizon Drive on Feb. 6.

CMU graduate Matt Soper was among those attending the event and said he was there to observe if Romney’s values were in line with his own conservative republican background.

“I came to get away from soundbyte media and to hear him out on pertinent issues,” Soper said.

Grand Junction City Council member and former banker Sam Susuras was also in attendance.

“There is a deterioration of integrity within politics and that Romney seems to be a man of good qualities,” Susuras said.

Susuras said he believed President Obama made a critical mistake when he bailed out large corporations and banks in the 2008 collapse.

Attendees including small business owner Caerry Moe said Romney’s business background is the most practical solution.

At one point during his speech, Romney argued against Obama’s cuts of $500 billion from the defense budget. Guaranteeing in his first term of office, “an increase of 100,000 active duty members.”

Romney chastised Obama for how the median income had dropped by “10 percent over the past decade.” According to the Census Bureau, the drop from 1996 to 2010 was only 2.3 percent.

He said that Obama “racked up as much debt as all of the other presidents combined.”

According to www.politifact.com, at Obama’s inauguration, the accrued debt was $6.307 trillion. On December 14, 2011, the debt was $10.393 trillion. This amount is not more than the previous 43 presidents combined.

After closing out his speech, Romney made his way outside past a protester with a “NO GITMO” sign for celebratory handshakes.

Nearby, Sen. Steve King said, “The repercussions [of corporate influence in politics] are huge and it is unfortunate we have come to a point in politics with such little transparency.”
