Mavs cruise through weekend, fight for postseason

Plagued by turnovers against New Mexico Highlands University, the outcome of the CMU women’s basketball team (11-12, 9-10 RMAC) weekend series at Brownson Arena could have easily taken a turn for the worse as the Mavericks push for postseason play.

The Mavericks trailed NMHU on Friday early in the first half, finishing with a total of 12 turnovers as a team, but walked away with a 65-47 win.

“We came out pathetic to start the game to say the least,” coach Roger Walters said. “Once the kids settled down and got into the swing of things we played way better.”

Katrina Selsor appeared fully recovered from her knee injury that sidelined her for part of January and hit a key three-pointer for the Mavericks to put them within three points of the Cowgirls.

The Maverick offense built a 15-7 lead, holding NMHU scoreless for eight minutes. The Mavs had no trouble from that point and wrapped up the victory. The Maverick defense out-rebounded the Cowgirls 49-39.

Kelsey Sigl arrived with a hot hand for the Mavericks, leading her team with 20 points and seven rebounds.

Amy Weitzel and Tara Gehring added 10 points and Weitzel contributed six rebounds.

With a win against New Mexico Highlands, the Mavericks faced off against winless Western New Mexico University. The Mavs defeated Western New Mexico 88-71 in their first matchup of the season.

“There’s no change playing a winless team,” Walters said. “We’ve got to take care of business every single time.”

Sigl’s hot streak carried over from the previous night, starting the game with a three-pointer that propelled the Mavericks to an 86-48 victory.

“We moved the ball a lot better tonight,” Sigl said. “We focused on seeing each other and making better passes.”

The Mavericks had 13 players score and shot 55 percent from the field.

Sigl finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Selsor contributed 11 points, five rebounds and five assists. Weitzel added eight points.

“We were more focused tonight,” Walters said. “I was really pleased.”

The Maverick’s Senior Night will be at Brownson Arena next Saturday against Western State College.
