Open mic returns

Literary Review editor Meredith Terrell and assistant editor Heather Portenier are hosting the club’s second open mic night this Thursday at the Bookcliff café at 6 p.m. Contrary to what you may believe it is more than just poetry: short fiction, song lyrics, creative non-fiction and more.

“Pretty much anything besides maybe an academic paper or something that would bore everyone to death is welcome,” Terrell said.

The club’s last open mic night was held at Kannah Creek in an effort to welcome the public as well as students and had an outstanding turnout. There were around 35 attendees that filled up the back room that Terrell had reserved for the evening. Plenty of literature and like-minded company were shared.

The upcoming event has been moved back to campus for more space. The campus setting wil also not intimidate underage students from attending, as the previous semi-bar setting had. It will be featuring Dr. William Wright and Carol Christ both professors in the English Department. Wright and Christ are also published authors and will be reading poetry to start the evening. The English club will be having a bake sale fundraiser during the event.

The event is also special as it is near the deadline for the annual publication of The Literary Review and many students will be reading their entries for the publication. The Literary Review is a magazine the English department puts out each spring and is the second oldest publication on campus. It features students’ poems, short stories, short fiction, and art.

If you are interested in submitting anything to the review the deadline is Feb. 28. You can submit your work via email at literary.review@aol.com or bring it to the open mic night, to not just share with the editors but with all.
