All season, coach Jim Heaps has preached that the CMU men’s basketball team won’t be a one-man team, and that proved to be the case as the Mavs (11-8, 9-6 RMAC) toppled No. 3 Metro State on Saturday. The Mavs picked up two wins on the weekend, throttling Regis 71-36 and upsetting Metro State 64-47.

Friday night brought Regis to Brownson Arena. CMU jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. They went into half time with a 34-22 lead, shooting 56% from the field and hitting all four of their free throws. The second half was no different as the Mavs played stifling defense, holding Regis to 21% from the field and 14 total points in the second half.

With just under 17 minutes to go in the second half, Mavs’ senior forward Michael Bear sprained his ankle. He went up for a rebound on the defensive end and came down on the foot of a Regis player.

“He popped it pretty good,” Heaps said. “You feel so bad for him because it’s his senior year and he’s playing so well.”

Bear is expected to be out 2-4 weeks.

Colton Burgon led all scorers with 15 points and three rebounds. Shawn King, Chandler Burgon and Mike Melillo contributed with six points each.  The 35-point win is the largest of the season for the Mavs.

“One thing we need to carry over is the energy and intensity on the defensive end,” guard Daniel Estes said. “If we play like we did tonight, I like our chances.”

The Mavs came out strong to start the game Saturday night, matching the Roadrunners shot for shot and once again playing sound defense.

The score was tied at 24 going into the locker room as Melillo led the Mavs with seven points and Colton and Chandler Burgon chipping in with six points apiece.

In the second half, the two teams traded baskets and stops for the first seven minutes, bringing the score to 32-32. The Mavs were able to pull away with a 12-2 run, highlighted by five straight points from Colton Burgon and solid shooting from the charity stripe.

The lead proved too much for the roadrunners to overcome, as CMU was able to extend its lead to as much as 19, coming away with the upset win 64-47.

“There was absolutely no doubt in my mind we would have kids show up and play basketball tonight,” Heaps said. “No doubt in my mind.”

The Mavericks travel to Nebraska next weekend to take on Nebraska-Kearney and Chadron State, looking to extend their current three-game win streak and improve their 2-5 record on the road.
