Members of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity will be waxing and tuning skis and snowboards in the University Center as a part of their first fundraiser, which will be held from noon to 7 p.m. on the weekends through Feb. 19.

Members will perform a ski and snowboard wax for $15. A wax and tune up will cost $20, and a tune up, wax and base work will cost $25.

“Resorts charge more than we do for ski and snowboarding services,” sophomore and Treasurer Alex Douglas said.

Sophomore Cooper Cartmill said the fundraiser, which began Saturday, has been slow so far, but he said he hopes that it will pick up next weekend after the X Games.

Currently, Kappa Sigma is considered a colony, with around 25 members. A colony is a step below a chapter, which needs to have 60 members. Members are required to complete a checklist, attend workshops and raise money to pay for their chapter. The fundraiser will help them raise that money.

“We are getting closer and closer to becoming a chapter,” sophomore and Grand Master of Ceremonies Aaron Swope said.

Douglas said some people are hesitant about paying the required fees, which consist of an initial $45 pledge and an additional $50 per month.

“The fees are worth it,” Douglas said. “Kappa Sigma is financing your future, just like college is.”

According to Douglas, Kappa Sigma is founded on fellowship, leadership, service and scholarship. The colony teaches members how to be better leaders and students.

“There is a high success rate for anyone involved in Greek life,” Swope said. “More than 80 percent of all Fortune 500 CEOs are Greek. Since Kappa Sigma has a good reputation, it looks good on resumes. School and our community are very important to us.”

To become a member of Kappa Sigma, students must be able to vote and be a U.S. citizen. They must maintain a certain GPA, participate in at least one student organization or intramural sport and work a certain number of hours of community service.

“[Kappa Sigma] is a great place to meet new people because we don’t have cliques,” Douglas said. “We take time to get to know each other. It doesn’t matter what you do or who you are, we will welcome you wholeheartedly.”

Freshman and Grand Master Ronin Bennett said that with ASG’s support of Greek life, he hopes that Kappa Sigma will be an official part of CMU by fall 2012.

“We would like to get housing after we are more established,” Swope said. “We are in the process of talking to the Board of Trustees about it.”

Kappa Sigma meets at 6 p.m. on Sundays in the University Center. For location and more information, call 719-930-8047.
