Mavs winless on weekend with losses vs. Mines, CCU


After losing four of their last five games, the CMU women’s basketball team (8-9, 6-7 RMAC) looked to pick up RMAC victories on the road against Colorado Mines and Colorado Christian. In two close games, the Mavs came up winless, losing 58-54 at Mines and 79-76 at Colorado Christian.

On Friday, the Mavs and Orediggers exchanged buckets throughout the first half and went into halftime with a 28-25 lead. The Mavs were 9-25 from the field in the first half, and went 6-6 from the line. In the second half, CMU kept the score close for most of the half, but the Orediggers pulled away from the Mavericks in the end, sinking eight of nine free throws to end the game.

The Mavericks were lead by senior Tara Gehring, who had 13 points. Kelsey Sigl also finished with 13 points and Dallas Rohrbaugh added nine points.

In a back-and-forth battle at Colorado Christian University, the Mavericks lost another close game, 79-76.

Going into the second half, CMU trailed the Cougars 42-35. The Mavs surged to begin the half, tying the game at 45-45. When the Cougars regained a nine-point lead with 10 minutes left to play, the Mavericks were quick to respond, putting nine points on the board to tie the game 63-63.

With 23 seconds left in the game Sigl stole the ball and scored the go-ahead layup to put the score at 76-75. A foul on CMU gave the Cougars the ball, allowing them two free throws to take the lead 77-76. The Cougars secured the win in the final four seconds with two more free throws.

Sigl finished with 30 points for the Mavericks. Gehring added 13 points and seven rebounds and Rohrbaugh added nine points and two assists.

On Friday, the Mavericks will return to Brownson Arena to host Regis University on Friday and Metro State College on Saturday.
