A week after winning both games in the Clarion Inn Classic, the CMU women’s basketball team was back at it on its home court. The Mavs (4-2) opened RMAC play this weekend against the Chadron State Eagles and the Nebraska Kearney Lopers. The Mavs won both games on the weekend, with a 67-59 win over Chadron and a 73-61 victory over Kearney. The Mavs are riding a four-game win streak.

Friday night at Brownson, the Mavs battled a Chadron State squad still searching for its first win. CMU had control from opening tip to the final buzzer. CMU did trail for a small margin during the opening four minutes but from there the Mavs never gave up their lead. The Mavericks pulled away with another key home win and RMAC win, 67-59. Chadron dropped to 0-5 and 0-1 in RMAC play.

Leading the Mavericks to victory was the trio of Kelsey Sigl, Katrina Selsor and Amy Weitzeil, contributing 37 of CMU’s 67 points. Sigl ended the game with 15 points and seven rebounds. Selsor had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Weitzeil with 10 points, two assists and five rebounds. CMU out-rebounded Chadron 48-47 and shot 36% from the field.

CMU played again at home Saturday night against another winless squad. Kearney came out looking hot, making several three-point shots. First half turnovers plagued both teams. Kearney ran into foul trouble early as the Mavericks saw the line 19 times in the first half, Sigl taking a majority of the shots. About five minutes into the second half the Mavericks found their niche and started pulling away and extending their lead. CMU would win by a final score of 73-61.

Selsor and Sigl were back atop the score sheets for the Mavs. Selsor put up 18 points and nine rebounds, shooting 7-11 and making all three of her shots from the free throw line. Sigl started out slow as Kearney took to the double team to defend her but still ended the game with 17 points, two assists, and three rebounds.

CMU hits the road next weekend with a trip to New Mexico to take on Western New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands.
