Safety Day showcases businesses, educates students

At the fifth annual ASG Safety Day recently, students learned about safety resources that are available locally.

“Safety Day is all about trying to spread the message of health and wellness to students,” CMU At-large Senator Jason Holdorf said.

St. Mary’s “CareFlight” landed its helicopter in the quad between the library and Grand Mesa Residence Hall. CareFlight transports people to the hospital much quicker than an ambulance, increasing the chances of survival.

“The helicopter was a crowd pleaser,” ASG Director of External Affairs Stephanie Summar said. “It caught the attention of many students.”

At the ASG Zombie Apocalypse booth, students were asked general health questions. If the student got the question wrong, he or she automatically “died.” If students answered correctly, they rolled dice to reveal their fate. Certain numbers allowed the student to “live”, while other numbers caused the student to “die.” When “death” occurred, a phrase like “While babysitting, you realize that little Henry is now eating little Tommy. He’s coming for you next,” was read to the student.

The CMU Nursing Program offered free condoms and STD information.

“Many people don’t realize when they have an STD,” nursing student Jessica Blair said. “HPV is very common. As much as 8 out of 10 women will get HPV in their lifetime. Education can help prevent STDs.”

One reason the Nursing Program chose to participate in Safety Day was to educate students about the Student Health Center, located at 1060 Orchard Ave., Suite N. The Student Health Center provides students with physical examinations, health education, family planning and more.

The Kinesiology Department promoted the Monfort Family Human Performance Lab in the Maverick Center. This lab provides free health and skill services to CMU students. To find out more about the human performance lab, go to www.coloradomesa.edu/kinesiology/hprlab.html.

The Grand Junction Fire Department shared campus fire safety information and career opportunities with students during Safety Day.

“This fire department has several different types of specialty teams like the bomb squad because big cities are far away from us,” Grand Junction firefighter Bryan Lurvey said. “Since we have to be almost entirely self-sufficient, the firefighters are trained like big city firefighters. Safety for Mesa County residents is our number one priority.”

“Safety Day went really well,” Summar said. “The participating organizations provided a variety of information to students.”
