Greek life at CMU: ASG seeks student opinion

ASG recently held seven student forums on the possible introduction of Greek life at CMU. About 15 students attended each forum. They voiced their opinions on Greek life and heard many perspectives.

ASG President Justin Kawcak said the purpose of the forums was to measure students interested in Greek life, and to discuss how to establish sororities and fraternities on campus. Kawcak said he has received five to 10 emails daily from students regarding Greek life.

“We’ve tried to gauge a lot of student interest and have seen that there may be potentially a large enough interest to think about bringing Greek life to CMU,” Kawcak said.

The student forums have brought in positive feedback and many ideas of how Greek life should be structured. The newly formed chapter of the Kappa Sigma fraternity has had members present at every student forum.

“They are willing to answer the tough questions that have been asked,” Kawcak said. “The ones pertaining to alcohol, or to GPA or to community service, or to where they want to live, and will this create more cliques? If the student leaders that are trying to become leaders of Greek life can’t answer those questions and address those issues, then it would be a problem. So to have those people address those issues ahead of time is nice.”

According to Kawcak, the desire for Greek life is something that has been around off and on for years, and has recently been voiced again. Kawcak said the school’s growth in enrollment was the main factor in the number of people interested.

“Greek life isn’t about drinking and partying,” Kawcak said. “It’s not about Animal House and American Pie, and all the things that you see on TV. If Greek life were to come to CMU, it would be because it’s something that students want here and it’s something that students would be held accountable for. I think if this is done in a way that enhances lives of students at CMU, then it’s great for the campus.”

ASG will try to have the students’ decision on Greek life by the end of this semester. Kawcak said he wanted to point out that CMU is a dry campus, and adding Greek life won’t change that. Greek organizations will have to abide by campus policy or national policy, depending on which is more strict.
