Donarski, Petersen fuel Maverick wrestlers in Greeley

After last week’s match at the University of Wyoming Cowboy Open, CMU wrestlers traveled to Greeley to compete in the Old Chicago Northern Colorado Open on Saturday.

A pair of Mavs fought their way to the final of their respective weight classes, both coming out on top. Trevor Donarski battled his way to the 149-pound finals, defeating fellow Maverick James Martinez in a 12-4 decision. After an impressive debut at 184 pounds and placing fourth at last week’s meet, Junior Nick Petersen continued his success as he won the 184-pound bracket, beating Elliot Copeland of Western State in the finals.

After being pinned by eventual 157-pound winner Daniel Kelley from Adams State, Junior Jon Gappmaier bounced back and fought his way to the top of the consolation bracket, defeating Charlie McMartin by technical fault 17-2 to go home with third place.

Sophomore Zak Slotten won his consolation bracket at 174 pounds, defeating Brandon Sheldon from Colorado School of Mines 3-1 in overtime. Earlier in the day, Slotten had another close match go into overtime, losing 4-3 to Air Force Prep Willie Baker.

Freshman Alex Wranik had a strong showing in the Heavyweight class as he bounced back in the consolation bracket after being pinned by Sean Sullivan from Northwest College. Wranik pinned three opponents, all in under three minutes, with his final pin coming in 2:37 to win the fifth-place spot.

The Mavericks will host Western State College on Throwback Night at Brownson Arena on Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. followed by the Colorado Mesa University Open the next day.
