Mavericks return five upperclassmen, prepare for upcoming season

The last time we saw the CMU women’s basketball team take the court in Brownson Arena, it was as a Mesa State College team upsetting a No. 3 Fort Lewis squad 57-51. The Lady Mavs finished the season 17-10, 14-8 in the RMAC, before losing the first round of the RMAC tournament to Adams State.

This year they look to excel even further.

“We have gotten bigger, faster, and stronger over the past year,” coach Roger Walters said. “We have improved our chemistry with the addition of great kids as well as our returners.”

CMU is ranked 4th in the RMAC preseason rankings behind Fort Lewis, Metro State, and Colorado Christian.

CMU will return three seniors and two junior scorers in Katrina Selsor and Kelsey Sigl. Both were named to the RMAC preseason All-Conference team.  Sigl, a six-foot forward, put up 30 points and 10 rebounds last season against New Mexico Highlands, is a 1st team All-RMAC player and averaged 16.3 points a game last year. She is expected to lead the Maverick’s offensive attack this year as she did last season.

“Our returners spent a lot of time on their individual games and have improved,” Walters said. “We were able to recruit a great class this year and they will make us more athletic and provide depth off the bench that we did not have last season.”

The Mavericks are a young team with eight freshmen, three of whom are redshirts from last year. There are three sophomores including Hanna Bowden, who had 107 rebounds, 14 blocks and seven steals last season.

The Mavericks play their first three games in California against Cal State-Chico and Sonoma State University. CMU opens at home Nov. 25 for the Clarion Inn Classic against Tarleton State. RMAC play begins on Dec. 2 against Chadron State at Brownson Arena. l
