LAN hopes to expand

Every other Friday night at 6 p.m. people come to participate in LAN parties in Wubben 118, hosted by Senior Scott Hart, to play different games. The games are usually Minecraft, Starcraft, Halo and Team Fortress II.

“We have a hard time spreading new games, sometimes games don’t support it with multi-players,” Hart said.

LAN stands for Local Area Network. Hart came up with the idea to have these parties when he was a freshman. This plan didn’t work out until he became vice president of the Association for Computer Machinery. Since then he has been the official LAN party coordinator.

“Last year I took it upon myself since I was vice president and because I had experience with it. I was appointed by Marshall Sweatt, the president of ACM, to be in charge of it,” Hart said.

Hart would like to see the LAN party recieve more publicity. He and Sweatt are combining their parties together to have one huge one. They will be playing Team Fortress II.

“What I have been doing is texting a lot of my friends and getting them to spread the word. Next LAN party Swaett is going to bring the Kinect in case people don’t want to play Team Fortress II, can still have fun,” Hart said.

LAN parties work by hooking up a cable to a router and then using a switch so that multiple players can play the same game together.

“If we’re running on a local area network where these computers are going to be used, we actually have a switch that we use. We hook the switch onto the router and then they work together to have the computers work effectively. We will have hardly any lag,” Hart said.

Stop by Wubben on Friday night to join in on the LAN party fun.
