On Oct. 18, the CMU parking committee announced approval for the creation of motorcycle parking on campus, to precede the creation of a motorcycle club.
The decision was set for implementation at the end of fall break. Criminal Justice Major Israel Davidson pitched the idea of covered parking for motorcycles to Parking Manager Bryan Davis. Davis then brought up the idea to the parking committee.
“We didn’t obviously have any motorcycle parking in there,” Davis said. “We didn’t have any covered parking on campus.”
Two corners of the first floor of the parking garage on 12th Street, nearest to the University Center are devoted to areas where the aim of fitting bikes is a first come, first serve, land rush.
Each parking area contains enough space for several bikes and Davis stated that more space would be available on campus for additional parking, though time will tell where new parking will be located.
All that is for certain is that motorcyclists now have a place to park.
Davidson has been interested in motorcycle riding since high school.
“I bought my first motorcycle when I was 18 in Grand Junction,” Davidson said.
Armed with a constitution, three interested students, and willingness from the prospective club’s faculty advisor Marty Alcorta, Davidson has only paperwork and time ahead of him to solidify plans for a motorcycle club.
Assistant Vice President of Auxiliary Services and member of the parking committee Andy Rodriguez supported the decision to add commuter motorcycle parking.
“I think a lot of folks that ride motorcycles do it for a couple of different reasons,” Rodriguez said. “One, they like their bikes and the second is that they’re more economical.”
Davidson opted for starting the club upon noticing that the campus held an interest in motorcycle riding and commuter parking gains but contained no club of that interest.
“Motorcyclists tend to be a group that associates with other motorcyclists and I was really surprised that there was no club for motorcycles on campus,” Davidson said.
Davidson said that aside from motorcycle safety and mechanics, the purposes of the club will be teaching, learning and recreation. Davidson is currently seeking interested students. For more information, contact him at idavidso@mavs.coloradomesa.edu.
