Men’s soccer falls to Regis, recovers against Metro State

The CMU men’s soccer team (3-9-1, 3-6-0 RMAC) hit the road this weekend to take on conference opponents Metro State and Regis University. The Mavericks split the contests, falling to the Regis Rangers 4-0 and defeating the Metro State Roadrunners in overtime, 2-1. The results of the weekend put the Mavs in seventh place in the current RMAC Standings.

The Mavericks faced a tough Regis team in their first game of the weekend, and gave up two goals in each half en route to a 4-0 loss. The Rangers (7-3-1, 5-2-1 RMAC) were efficient on both offense and defense, shutting out the Mavs and allowing only three shots on goal while tying the highest point total given up by the Mavericks this year. Sophomore midfielder Marco Escobar, redshirt sophomore forward Brandon Burton, and junior defender Mohammed Gaye were the only players able to test the Regis goalie during the contest. Redshirt freshman Caleb Ealy was credited with four saves in the loss.

However, the Mavs responded to the loss with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over the Roadrunners (7-3-1, 5-2 RMAC). Metro State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the 6th minute, but that lead would not last after Danny Molineaux scored in the 36th minute. The second half of play was scoreless due to tough play by the Maverick defense and great saves by redshirt freshman Micah Conrads, which forced overtime. The Mavs  struck immediately in overtime, scoring the golden goal in the 91st minute. Redshirt freshman midfielder AJ Marquez was able to put the game away with a shot off a corner kick from junior defender Jeremy Gwerder. Conrads was awarded the win and recorded six saves on the day.

The men’s soccer team will return home to Walker Field this Wednesday to take on Fort Lewis at 7 p.m.
