Mavs win in Salt Lake City, split weekend series at home

The CMU women’s volleyball team (7-12, 2-7 RMAC) traveled to Salt Lake City last Tuesday and defeated Westminster College, 3-1. On Friday, the Mavericks returned to Brownson Arena, improving their RMAC record with a 3-0 sweep over Western State College and a 3-1 loss against CSU-Pueblo.

“The wins were really important for us, especially after the rough week on the road,” coach Dave Fleming said.

At Westminster College, the Mavericks pulled ahead to an early lead. The Griffins responded, but the Mavericks won the first set, 25-23. Kelly Regimbal and Antoinette McCormick’s defense prevented a Griffin upset.

The Mavericks dropped the second set to the Griffins 25-20, but came back to win the third set 25-20.

CMU had a 19-10 lead, but the Griffins put together a rally and pulled the score within four points. Rebecca Sellers closed out the set with a kill, bumping the Mavericks to a 2-1 lead.

In the fourth set, CMU trailed the Griffins for most of the game. Westminster service error tied the game at 25. The Mavericks won the set and the game on a kill from McCormick and a Megan Rush ace.

Rush combined for four total service aces and 17 digs. McCormick had 12 kills and three blocks and Regimbal added 10 kills and seven digs.

“We need to become more comfortable competing,” Fleming said. “We need to learn how to respond when teams push our buttons.”

The Mavericks returned to Brownson Arena on Friday to sweep the Western State Mountaineers 3-0. The Mavericks finished with a total of 42 kills, 45 digs and three blocks. Jordyn Moody of the Mavericks had 34 assists and Rush added 18 digs and two aces.

CSU-Pueblo arrived at Brownson Arena on Saturday and defeated the Mavericks 3-1. Sellers led the Mavericks with 14 kills and 13 digs. The Mavericks had five service aces, but were plagued by 14 service errors.

“We played really well,” Fleming said. “We just couldn’t find a way to get it done when it was important.”

The Mavs hit the road next week beginning at Colorado Mines on Thursday night. Friday, the Mavs will travel to Nebraska-Kearney and Saturday and Chadron State on Sunday.

“If we’re going to climb back into the playoff race, these wins are very important,” Fleming said. “These teams are very good teams.”
