The CMU volleyball team (5-11, 1-6 RMAC) had a disappointing weekend in New Mexico, dropping two matches to RMAC opponents Western New Mexico University and New Mexico Highlands University. The Mavs stayed competitive in both matches, but were unable to close in key situations.

The Mavs struggled in their first match, losing 3-1 to New Mexico Highlands. The teams split the first two sets, but the Cowgirls proved too much to handle as they took control to win. In the second match against Western New Mexico, the Mavs failed to keep up with the Mustangs and dropped the match 3-0. Although the Mavericks were able to keep the set within six points, the Mustangs had a .500 attack percentage in the final set that finished them off.

Despite the losses, there were plenty of great performances by Maverick players, including Kelly Regimbal, Rebecca Sellers, Antoinette McCormick, Megan Rush, and Jordyn Moody. In the two games combined, Regimbal delivered 31 kills, followed by McCormick with 21 and Sellers with 19. Rush led the team with 29 digs and Moody had 81 assists. The Mavs averaged a .208 attack percentage against their New Mexico rivals.

The Mavericks stand fifth in the RMAC West division behind Adams State, Colorado State-Pueblo, Western New Mexico, and New Mexico Highlands. However, the Mavs have 11 conference matches left on their schedule to climb in the rankings. If they can finish strong in conference, the possibility of taking the top spot in their division is still a reachable goal. The Mavericks have another road contest against non-conference opponent   before returning home to Grand Junction. The Maverick volleyball team looks to gain ground in the conference against Western State this Friday at 7 p.m. at Brownson Arena.
