The CMU football team (1-4, 0-3 RMAC) was plagued by turnovers on Saturday, resulting in a 33-21 loss against Western New Mexico.

Freshman Chris Henderson, under center for the Mavs, threw for 149 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 97 yards. However, Henderson had six turnovers, including three interceptions and three lost fumbles.

“We all feel that it was a game that could have easily been a win for us,” redshirt freshman linebacker Gene White said.

The Mavs led the game after the first quarter 14-13 with touchdown runs by Jake Cimolino and Henderson. Cimolino ran for 121 yards on 14 carries.

At the half, the Mavericks trailed 20-14 and then took an early lead in the third quarter when Henderson hooked up with Tanner Whaley for a 33-yard touchdown. That was the last time that the Mavs would score.

Western New Mexico dominated the game from that moment on, scoring two touchdowns and causing three turnovers to seal the win.

White said the ongoing story for the team seems to be that they make little mistakes each week that keep the team from winning.

“It was a tough loss for us,” White said. “We have a very talented team, but we just need to erase those little mistakes we are making and we will be on the right track.”

Connor Wright had another impressive game with one sack, three quarterback hurries and nine tackles. Domonique Lewis had eight tackles and a forced fumble.

The Mavs will travel to Durango next Saturday to play Ft. Lewis before coming home in two weeks to host Colorado School of Mines on Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.
