Art gives hope to Uganda: Grand Junction organization holds fund raising art show

On Sept. 30, a non-profit event, “Light Gives Heat,” raised money for people in Uganda. At the event, Patrick Maxcy, an artist and curator from South Florida, had 40 different artists help with this event. Artists like Maxcy came to this event because they enjoyed working with the organization.

“I then realized it would be great to combine and unite some of my favorite artists from around the globe with the same common purpose and theme, creating amazing artwork in one location for an amazing cause,” Maxcy said.

People were invited to come and see the 40 big name artists from all over the world many who have done work for celebrities. It was an amazing opportunity to see their artwork for no cost. Some of the more well-known artists include Brandon Dunlap, Jeremy Cowart and Skot Olsen.

DJ Griz was there playing a variety of music to keep the atmosphere energetic at the art show.

The artwork on display was on sale for a 100 percent or 50 percent tax-deductible donation to “Light Gives Heat.” This profit helps employ people in Uganda. It allows them to bring in daily income so they can live and provide for their families.

“The organization creates income through our necklace and bags line,” creator of “Light Gives Hope” Dave Hansow said.

The artists were not the only ones contributing to the cause. There were many different sponsors that Maxcy got to help sponsor them. Companies like Palisade Brewery, Qdoba, The Egg & I, Red Lobster, Roasted, Four Winds, and others helped the cause.

“We have some awesome sponsors who contributed in a number of different ways. Jedidiah Clothing is one of our main sponsors. Also, Kind Bars donated hundreds of bars with a message of promoting random acts of kindness,” Maxcy said.

“Light Gives Heat” will have the show open from now until Oct. 21, and they will be doing other things to help raise money for Uganda. Hansow and his wife also just finished making a feature film, and will be traveling with the film to many film festivals.

The “Light Gives Heat” main office is located in Grand Junction, and the rest of the organization is in Uganda. Staff helps out the people over there, and provides pop shops and film festivals in the U.S.

“Light gives Heat is a non-profit, and offers consistent incomes to start new programs, and allows us to do what we do,” Hansow said.
