The Maverick Volleyball team (5-9, 1-4 RMAC) looked to turn their luck around this weekend with an away match at Alamosa followed by two matches at Brownson Arena. The Maverick’s losing streak hit five matches after being swept 3-0 by Adams State, but they were able to end the weekend with wins against Black Hills State and Fort Lewis College.

“This feels especially good,” Rebecca Sellers said. “A five match losing streak puts a damper on the season, but I’m glad we came together and finally won a match.”
Friday’s match against Adams State was plagued from the start as Antoinette McCormick tweaked her knee in pre-game warmups. McCormick played through the injury, but the Mavs lost 3-0.

Coach Dave Fleming decided to keep McCormick out of Saturday’s match up against future conference foe Black Hills State. Her teammates were able to fill the void and get their first win in almost two weeks, as they beat the Yellow Jackets 3-1. Kelly Regimbal led the team with 17 kills and Sellers was able to add 12 kills. Sellers added 12 digs and Captain Megan Rush recorded 21 digs.

“Even without McCormick, our bench is big and we all stepped up,” Sellers said. “This game just shows how deep we are and that we can step up when we need to. We look to bring this kind of effort to Black Hills every time we face them now.”

In McCormick’s first game back, her presence was felt as she delivered 11 kills and four digs as the Mavs beat Fort Lewis 3-1 for their first conference victory of the year. Regimabal led the team with 15 kills and Jordyn Moody led the team in assists with 39. Rush kept things rolling with her 20 digs.

The Mavericks will travel to New Mexico next weekend as they play New Mexico Highlands Friday and Western New Mexico on Sunday.
