Mavericks triumph in overtime, defeat UCCS 2-1

The Colorado Mesa University women’s soccer team finished the weekend with two wins, defeating Adams State College 3-0 and escaping with a 2-1 overtime victory against University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

In Friday’s match, the Mavericks dominated from the first whistle. Daniela Salinas fired a shot into the top corner of the net, scoring the first goal of the game in the second minute. Less than 15 minutes later, midfielder Sara Islas added to the Maverick lead. On a pass from Salinas, Islas beat the goalkeeper into the left side of the net, giving the Mavs a 2-0 lead.

The Mavs sealed their victory with a goal from Sophia Whighman in the 88th minute.

On Sunday, the Mavs had a slow start and fell behind on a goal from UCCS forward Jessica Escobedo. It appeared that UCCS would escape with a 1-0 victory, but forward Sophia Whigham shocked the crowd with a soft, well-placed goal from 20 yards out in the 89th minute to tie the game at 1-1.

In overtime, the Maverick attack exploded, earning four corner kicks in less than three minutes. On the fourth corner, forward Kelci Crispe found the head of Kaitlynn Holt who blasted the ball past the keeper. It was the golden goal for the Mavericks, giving them the 2-1 win.

The Mavs have been dominant over the past few weeks, winning four of their past six matches and outscoring their opponents 10-5 in that span.

Freshman Daniela Salinas is the top performer for the Lady Mavs with two goals and three assists on the year. She has also been aggressive around the net with a team-leading 22 shots on goal.

Goalkeeper Arielle Harris has been nearly unbeatable over the past six matches with two shutouts and a 0.92 save percentage. This week, she earned RMAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

The Lady Mavericks will travel to Pueblo on Sept. 30 to face off against the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves.
