House party erupts in violence

A weekend party turned violent, but no arrests were made.
Just after midnight on Sept. 18, officers were dispatched to the corner of 19th and Elm Streets because injuries and property damage were reported.
“It was reported that people were playing beer pong at a house party when a fight erupted,” Grand Junction Police Department spokeswoman Kate Porras said. “People were told to leave. An hour later, some people who were at the party came back and caused other fights and damaged some property.”
According to police, CMU students Collin Sheppard and Timothy Lynn removed almost everyone from their house after a small fight because they didn’t want their party to turn violent. Sheppard said there were only a few people remaining at the house when they heard objects coming through a window and pounding at the door.
“I opened up the door to see what they wanted,” Sheppard said. “Before I had the chance to feel the breeze coming in from the just opened door, a man hit my face with a heavy glass bottle. It happened so fast. I don’t even think the guy who hit me knew who I was.”
Lynn said that the glass bottle that hit Sheppard was covered in blood.
While the fights were occurring, Sheppard said three men asked him and his friends if they knew someone named John. According to Sheppard and Lynn, no one knew anybody by that name and they also did not know the suspects personally.
“Our party was the first time my roommates and I met them,” Lynn said.
Sheppard and Lynn said they didn’t know what caused the men to act violently.
Sheppard’s injuries required 13 stitches on his face. He also has a fractured nasal bone, which he had to have surgery for.
Sheppard said the suspects were also violent to other people in his house. Jess Hemming was hit with a gun. It is unknown if the gun was loaded.
“They were threatening to shoot us,” Lynn said.
Sheppard’s home has multiple broken windows. Lynn’s Honda Civic has a dent, damaged windows and the passenger mirror was torn off.
The suspects left the scene before the police arrived.
“Even though the police have not made any arrests in this case so far, I am remaining optimistic because I know the names of the people who did this. Plus, there were witnesses,” Sheppard said.
Porrras said the case is currently under investigation.
“Once we find out more information, we will decide what action to take,” Porras said.
