Campus radio gets naked: Morning show hosts clothing drive

Colorado Mesa University’s on-campus radio station is 91.3 KMSA The Alternative. Unfortunately many CMU students have not heard of it. That is why Kyle Cooper and Kenny Coles, the humorous hosts of The Breakfast Buffet, are putting on Naked Day. It started as a joke between the two friends, and was inspired by the song, “Naked in New York City” by Kyle Andrews.

“On the Wednesday of Naked Day we will be playing a lot of songs with the word naked in the title,” Cooper said.

While Cooper was in the Chicago airport checking up on the Breakfast Buffet Facebook page, he noticed that Coles was scheming to have a Naked Day here at CMU. Immediately Cooper gave his co-host a call. They picked a date, Sept. 28, and began planning.

The idea behind “getting naked” is all about campus awareness and advertising for a clothing drive. The radio hosts are hoping to collect clothes to donate to the Catholic Outreach. Both clothes that are shed on Wednesday and clothes that people bring in will be donated. In order to spread the word about campus radio, they are asking that all participants write “KMSA913.com” and “The Breakfast Buffet” somewhere visible on their body. Half-naked bodies are great walking billboards.

“The word ‘naked’ grabs people’s attention,” Cooper said.

Cooper and Coles suggest not being completely naked because you will most likely be arrested. The point of this event is to wear as little clothing as possible while still following indecent exposure laws, and still feel comfortable. Many of the other Breakfast Buffet shows around the country will also be participating, in states such as Hawaii, Nevada, New York, Maine, Oregon, North Carolina, and possibly others.

The Breakfast Buffet started in mid June, and does not play typical music that is most often heard on other stations around Grand Junction. The radio focuses on alternative music that most people don’t know about, before it becomes popular and mainstream.

“I don’t mean to be punny, but we are the alternative station, and we play music that you can’t hear from other stations in Grand Junction,” Cooper said.

Make sure to check out 91.3 KMSA. Have a little fun with your college experience and support Naked Day by hopping into your birthday suits.
