The Colorado Mesa University women’s volleyball team completed their non-conference schedule with a record of 3-5 as they prepared to enter RMAC play this past Thursday night.

The Mavericks began RMAC competition as they hosted the Metro State Roadrunners at Brownson Arena.

The Roadrunners swept CMU, 3-0. The Mavericks had 22 kills and 38 digs, but they were outmatched by Metro State who recorded 44 kills and 54 digs. Freshman Jordyn Moody led the team with 17 assists.

Moody combined with Megan Rush for a total of 21 digs for the Mavericks. Rush also added one service ace.

On Friday night, the Mavericks hoped to bounce back from the previous night as they hosted Regis University.

The team’s performance looked promising as they jumped to an early lead over Regis, 12-9. The Rangers came back and won the first set, but this did not slow CMU down.

In the second set, the Mavericks took another early lead over Regis. This time, the team was able to keep momentum and defeated the Rangers 25-16. The Mavs kept it close in the third set, having the lead on multiple occasions but failed to get the win. The final game, the Rangers blew past the Mavericks and won the match 3-1.

Rush recorded 27 digs and four assists. Moody added 45 assists.

CMU closed out their weekend on Saturday night, when they hosted Colorado Christian University in their “Swing for Life” game, a fundraiser for breast cancer.

“A game doesn’t compare what a woman fighting [breast] cancer has to go through,” head coach Dave Fleming said.

“Swing for Life” is a non-profit organization, whose proceeds are donated to breast cancer research.
After a rough few days, the Mavs came out strong against CCU and won the first game 25-23.

“We knew that we had a chance if we came out aggressive and hit the ball hard,” Fleming said.

Momentum from the first game carried into the second but was quickly diminished by the Cougars, as they jumped to a big lead and defeated the Mavericks 25-17.

When the team came back from intermission, the intensity reappeared during the third game. In what seemed to be a back and forth game, the Mavs hung in with the Cougars, but lost 27-25.

“We had to make some adjustments,” Fleming said. “They serve really slow, meaning they wait the whole eight seconds and our serve-receive was just getting locked.”

CMU didn’t lose without a fight. In the fourth game the Mavericks came from behind to win it 25-23, forcing the fifth game. The Mavs weren’t able to make the comeback and fell to the Cougars 15-12 in the fifth set.

“I really liked the fight the team had tonight,” Fleming said. “If we’re going to get beat, we’re going to go out and fight.”

With this weekend’s outcome, the Mavericks fall to a record of 0-3 in the RMAC. The team will travel to Adams State this Friday.
