On Friday night the Mavs opened conference play against the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers at Walker Field.

The Mavericks defeated the Lopers 1-0, their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory of the year.

The Mavs scored the only goal of the match when Sara Islas found the net on an assist from teammate Tayler Franklin in the 18th minute.

Tight defense held the Lopers to only five shots, two of them being on goal. Goalie Arielle Harris had two saves to seal the shutout.

“We’re thrilled and excited, but there is so much time left in the season,” coach Erin Sharpe said. “This is just one small step toward our ultimate goal.”

On Sunday, the Mavericks played in the “Swing for Life” breast cancer fundraiser game against 17th ranked Regis University. The Mavs defeated the Rangers 3-1.

In honor of the “Swing for Life” event, the Mavericks sported their pink jerseys with black numbers that were auctioned off after the game. All proceeds from the auction were donated to breast cancer research.

The first half of the game, the Rangers put constant pressure on the Mavericks, keeping it near the CMU goal. But momentum changed in favor of the Mavericks when junior Kelci Crispe scored in the 17th minute, giving CMU a 1-0 lead over the Rangers.

Shortly after, teammate Kaitlynn Holt found the net for the Mavericks, ending the first half of the contest with CMU leading Regis 2-0.

Defense was sound for the Mavs until the beginning of the second half when Regis’ Maddie Reeves put the Rangers on the board, making the score 2-1.

With 20 minutes left to play, Tayler Franklin snuck a shot into the Rangers net yet again to put the Mavericks up 3-1.

“We really worked together well today,” defenseman Sam Burneo said. “No one was giving up. We all knew we could do it this time.”

Next up for the Mavericks is Fort Lewis College this Wednesday.

“Fort Lewis is number three in the nation, and we’re going to take it to them,” Burneo said.
