Wright records six sacks, Mavs roll over Dixie

The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks (1-1) outlasted the Dixie State Red Storm (0-2) in a high scoring game Saturday night in St. George, Utah, 52-30. It was the Mavs first win of the season and as a university. The win also snapped a six game road losing streak dating back to last season.

The Mavericks outscored the Red Storm 42-8 in the second half after being down 22-10 at halftime. The game was decided by big plays from the defense. CMU intercepted Dixie State’s quarterback five times, returning three of them for touchdowns. Trent DeBraga returned both of his interceptions for touchdowns and Travis McRae returned one of his.

Senior defensive end Connor Wright had a record breaking night with six sacks, an individual game record. He also had 12 tackles, two quarterback hurries, and one pass breakup.

“It was great to finish the game so strong, but I was disappointed in the way I played the first half,” Wright said. “At the half, our coaches gave the defensive line freedom to get the job done and they also gave us some great adjustments to exploit Dixie State’s offensive line.”

DeBraga’s interception return for a touchdown to open the second half pulled the Mavs within five points and shifted momentum. On Dixie’s second possession, Wright had back-to-back sacks to bring their drive to a halt.

“We have a great group of defensive backs and linebackers that can step up and make huge plays for us and I think they showcased that tonight,” Wright said. “I would also like to thank my fellow defensive line. It’s because of them I had such a great night. I love and trust those boys with all my heart.”

After trailing 22-30, CMU scored 28 unanswered to secure the 52-30 win. Redshirt freshman Jake Cimolino had a huge night rushing for 144 yards on 21 carries.

Robert Feldberg was only 6-16 for 54 yards passing, but he rushed for two touchdowns.

“It was a great team win and our defense really stepped up huge this week. This win really brought us closer as a team and proved how good we really are when we play like we can,” Felberg said. “We are just going to go back to work on Monday to prepare for Kearney and focus on getting better at everything we do. Kearney is a good football team but we will definitely be ready to go on Saturday.”

The Mavs are proud of their first victory, but they aren’t satisfied yet.

“That first win is great but I can’t wait for the next one,” Wright said. “We just need to make a few small tweaks in practice this week and then come out flying around, hitting people and having fun on game day.”

CMU returns home Saturday Sept. 17. to open up RMAC action against Neb. Kearney, who is ranked 13th in the Nation. The game starts at noon at Stocker Stadium.
