Lady Mavs split weekend series

The Colorado Mesa University volleyball team hosted the Holiday Inn Crossroad Classic Tournament this weekend at Brownson Arena and the Hamilton Rec Center. The Lady Mavs split their homestand with a 2-2 record.

After being swept by Dixie State College 3-0, the Mavs bounced back with straight-set sweeps against University of Mary and Saint Anslem College. The Mavs lost their final match of the weekend 3-1 to the Academy of Arts.

The Mavs hosted Dixie State in their home opener on Thursday. They fell in three sets, producing 22 kills and 21 attack errors. Antoinette McCormick led the Mavs with six kills and Jordyn Moody had a team-high 17 assists.

On Friday night, the Mavs rebounded from Dixie State and swept University of Mary 3-0. The second set was a stalemate with multiple rallies. Both attempted the set point, but the Mavs came out on top. In the third set, the Mavs shut down the opposition. McCormick clinched the match with an outstanding kill.

“The whole team including myself took on this game a lot better mentally, we all had something to prove. It felt good,” McCormick said.

On Saturday, the Lady Mavs hosted two games at Brownson Arena against St. Anselm University and Academy of Arts.

In the first match of the day, the Mavs defeated St. Anselm 3-0. McCormick led the team with 11 kills and also recorded four assists.

In the second match against the Knights of the Academy of Arts, the Lady Mavs were overwhelmed by Angelia Heath’s 14 kills and eight assists. The Lady Mavs pushed the competition to a fourth set, but the Knights took advantage of the Mavs’ exhaustion from playing a match earlier in the day, falling 3-1.

The Lady Mavs will host Metro State this Thursday at Brownson Arena at 7 p.m.
