5k charity race: the “Son Run” helps cancer patients

On Sept. 24, Tami Duran will be hoping for a sunny day and people willing to run her 5k charity race called the “Son Run.” The benefit was named after her father, Earl S. Von Burg Jr.

“My dad’s nickname is Son, and it rhymes. You have to have a name people will remember,” Duran said

Duran’s father had multiple myeloma, cancer of the plasma cells in bone marrow. Doctors told the family that he would only live for three years, but Sonny lived for 12 years. He died August 15, 2007, and the “Son Run” was created in his memory.

Money raised from the race goes to cancer patients. When Duran created the race, her desire was to help uninsured cancer patients.

“They need help, and this is a little bit of help for them,” Duran said.

All donations will go to the Cummings Family Center and Cancer Center. Duran and the Cummings Center share the same desire to help with the cost of cancer treatment.

“When he died, they set this up under his name and it is the only help that I qualified for. If you do not qualify for anything else, you qualify for that,” Duran said.

This is the second year of the race. Last year the benefit raised $1,500. This year, she hopes to double the donations. The “Son Run” will take place on September 24, at the Glacier Ice Arena. Registration starts at 6:30 a.m. and the race begins at 8 a.m.

More information about the “Son Run” can be found on Facebook. Applications can be printed off from their website, thesonrun.cfsites.org.
