Volleyball woes: Lady Mavs lose three of four

Last Friday, the Colorado Mesa University volleyball team traveled to Golden to open their season at the Oredigger Volleyball Classic.

The Mavs (1-3) had a rocky start, losing their first match 3-2 against Montana State-Billings. Junior Kelly Regimbal and sophomore Haleigh Higgins combined for 26 kills to lead the Mavericks in the first match. Higgins also contributed 18 digs and one service ace. The team was leading MSUB 2-1 in the beginning of the match, but the Yellow Jackets came back to tie the sets 2-2, and then pushed past the Mavericks in the last set with only two points left to determine the winner.

On Saturday, the Mavs jumped out on top with a 2-0 set lead over St. Cloud State. The Huskies came back to tie the set 2-2 and force the fifth set on the Mavericks, where they fell, 15-11.

CMU’s Rebecca Sellers led the team with 15 kills and 11 digs. Higgins and Regimbal added 12 and 11 kills respectively. The Maverick defense had only 5 blocks.

The Mavericks rallied back following two losses to defeat Southwestern Oklahoma 3-2 for their first victory of the season and the tournament.

Regimbal continued to lead the team with 17 kills and 12 digs. Freshman Jordyn Moody contributed 55 assists and four kills to the victory in her first start at CMU.

In their final game of the Oredigger Volleyball Classic, the Mavs lost 3-2 to the University of Findlay. A CMU service error and a kill gave Findlay their first win of the season.

The Mavs will be in action this Thursday night in Brownson Arena at the Maverick Center. CMU will take on Dixie State at 7 p.m. as they host the Holiday Inn Crossroads Classic.
