MavPav finds new home, purpose

What started out as a temporary cafeteria and bookstore while the University Center was being reconstructed, The Maverick Pavilion was later transformed into classrooms and storage. From there, the Hamilton Recreational Center took the pavillion for training space.

“The way we set it up is to accommodate a lot of different things,” Campus recreational services Director Michael Wells said.

Construction on the 15,000 square foot project began this past summer. The new building is a multi-use facility. Included in the pavilion will be high performance, rubberized sport surface. It will have two basketball courts, three volleyball courts, two tennis courts and track straight-aways. The space will also include two batting cages, areas that will allow students to play lacrosse, soccer and will include multiple scoreboards. An office and front desk similar to the rec center will be attached the building along with bathrooms.

“I don’t know if the surface is perfect, but you can do a lot of everything in there,” Wells said.

The first priority of the Maverick Pavilion will be for academics if needed. All aspects included in the pavilion are then available for general student use, including intramural team usage. After that, there will be time for varsity athletic programs. Any extra time will allow for the community to use the facility for athletic events or functions.

If that construction stays on track, the new and improved Maverick Pavilion is set to open on September 16.
