Dry campus wants to serve liquor

This spring, Mesa State food provider Sodexo applied for a liquor license in order to serve alcohol at special events on and off campus.
Director of Media Relations Dana Nunn said the application had been discussed for a long time.
“The liquor license will be used for special events,” Nunn said. “Those events may be college-sponsored or hosted by someone renting the space.”
Sodexo has served alcohol on campus for special events in the past.
According to Colorado law, businesses are only allowed a limited number of temporary special events permits to serve alcohol per year. Because Sodexo is nearing its limit for the year, they have decided to apply for a liquor license instead of having to apply for a special permit each time the college hosts an event.
The College Center ballroom has been rented out to private parties and has held events including awards banquets and fundraisers for various community organizations.
If granted the liquor license, Sodexo will be able to serve alcohol on campus at the Elliott Tennis Center, Walker Field and the College Center. However, don’t expect to see beer in the Bookcliff Cafe.
“I don’t think anything will change,” Nunn said. The campus does not anticipate any problems for having the ability to serve liquor at special events.
