On Friday, April 15, Mesa State students, faculty and staff gathered together in front of the west entrance of the College Center to honor and remember the lives of students that died in recent years.
The first Rememberance Day began four years ago, on the one year anniversary of the deaths of MSC students Jake Brock and Jennifer Kois, who were killed after a drunk driver slammed into their car. A moment of silence followed a speech by ASG President Nick Lopez, and 24 various colored balloons were released in memory of these students.
“The colors represent a favorite color of those who’s lives have been lost,” Lopez said.
A red balloon was released in memory of Kois and a purple balloon was released in Brock’s memory.
Another balloon was released in memory of former MSC athlete and ASG member, Jonny Maxfield.
“It is written in the bylaws of ASG, and we hope to continue this tradition,” Student Trustee Ryan Hendershot said.
