Column: The fools of sports

(This was a column written by the Editor in Chief in 1998.)
It’s April Fool’s Day, and in honor of this off-the-wall holiday, it only seems appropriate that we honor the Latrell Sprewells, Mike Tysons, Denver Nuggets and other goofy sports icons of the world. So without further ado, I propose the question:
Wouldn’t it be funny if:
-The Mesa State baseball team could draw more than 50 people to a game. About as many people head out to Suplizio Field on a regular basis as go to a five-hour Associated Student Government meeting. At least you won’t find long-winded politicians at a ball field.
-The Mesa State softball team could draw more than 25 people to a game. About as many people head out to Bergman Field on a regular basis as go to a five-hour … oh, nevermind.
-North Carolina basketball player Makhtar Ndiaye said Utah forward Britton Johnsen used a racial slur against him, and then said he didn’t, and then he did. Actually, it wouldn’t be too far off from what Ndiaye has already said. First, Ndiaye said Johnsen called him a “n****” during an NCAA tournament semifinal game. Then, Ndiaye said he didn’t. Well, which is it? It would be truly regrettable if Johnsen actually did use such a word. But if he didn’t, why did Ndiaye accuse him of doing so? Ndiaye claims he was upset after losing to the Utes, “let his emotions get away from him” and as a result, said some things he shouldn’t have. I find it hard to believe. I consider myself to be a very competitive individual, but I couldn’t possibly see myself using such degrading words about another hyman being simply because I was “emotional.”
-Since he has found a new career in wrestling, Tyson takes a chunk out of another wrestler. Actually, to keep the spirit of the sport, he would probably only have to bite the air near his ear to achieve the same result. That would be pretty ear-ie, wouldn’t it?
-Sprewell and Tyson were locked in a room together and, you know, we wait and see what happens.
