On March 25, the 35th Annual Mesa State All-campus Student Art Show opened at the Art Center located at the corner of 7th and Orchard. The show, featuring work from Mesa State students, includes paintings, prints, collages, sculpture, bronze, ceramics, photography and more.
Both 2-D and 3-D works are featured.
“A majority of the students that enter are art majors of some sort. However, we do see many talented artists submit work who are declaring majors other than art,” show coordinator Vincent Zawada said.
Zawada, an art instructor at Mesa State, teaches an Exhibitions and Management class that helps students with organizing aare shows. At the beginning of the semester, students selected two judges who chose which work was included in the show, as well as which works received awards. The judges, David Riley and Mary Mansfield, said that their decisions were based off of professionalism, presentation, use of materials, techniques, and understanding of design principles and formal elements of art.
All students have a variety of approaches when it comes to preparing for a show. However, more than creating the actual piece is involved. Thinking clear in advance, and consideration in how the work will be displayed is also crucial. Participating in an art show helps build students’ resumes.
“Galleries like to see that artists are continually exhibiting their work,” Zawada said.
The awards given included Best in Show, first through third place in both 2-D and 3-D as well as four honorable mentions. Senior Jacob Thaden received Best in Show as well as second place in 3-D. Larry Bowles received first place for the 3-D category, and Amy Kuper received third place. In the 2-D category, Marilyn Wilcox received first place, Kendra Meder was awarded second place, and Rebecca Woods received third place. Julia Ennis received two honorable mentions. Rebecca Woods and Pavia Justinian each received an honorable mention as well.
A grand reception, gallery talk and award ceremony will take place at the Art Center from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Friday, April 1.
The show is free for Mesa State students, faculty and staff and will remain open until April 8. The Art Center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Other admissions are $3 and Tuesdays are free to everyone. Further information can be found at www.gjartcenter.org.
