Introducing PR Club pageant

Mesa State’s campus clubs will enter a pageant this semester. Based on their abilities to engage students in creative ways. It’s called “Mr. and Mrs. MSC” and is sponsored by Mesa State’s new Public Relations Club for their inclusive upcoming fundraiser, It will be held on March 31. The PR Club will host the pageant-like competition in the College Center’s ballroom, to find two students who best embodies the Mesa State College spirit.

Earlier this year, PR Club members could be spotted at the College Center’s Grand Opening, pretending to be paparazzi photographers. While events like that fulfill the club’s interests, campus clubs are also charged with raising their own funds.

The “Mr. and Ms. MSC” contest features a best-dressed award, a talent segment, and a question-and-answer session. It is expected to be an annual fundraising event for the group. Campus clubs face a challenge when it comes to tying money raising in a way that serves the interests of the members. The PR Club, established during the fall semester, has found that “Mr. and Ms. MSC” will accomplish both goals.

While other schools have similar annual contests, it’s brand new to Mesa State.

“A lot of schools have something like this, so it’s ,in a way, reviving or starting a tradition at Mesa State,” Faculty Advisor Dan Flenniken said. “It’s meant to be fun and it’s not just based on looks, it’s based on talent.”

The PR Club hopes a diverse group of students will participate, and to garner support, they’ve invited other clubs and athletic teams to join in the fun and have a stake in the competition.

“It’s meant to involve other clubs, sports teams, and anybody on-campus or off-campus who wants to compete,” Flenniken said.

Clubs and teams across campus are invited to nominate their own members to represent the group’s interests and exhibit an obvious sense of school spirit. This kind of engagement means the contest will be competitive both for the twenty individuals who participate, and for their groups, who are invited to attend the event to cheer their candidates on.

A Mr. and Ms. MSC will be crowned based on their performance in the three areas of the contest. A panel of six judges, which will consist of students, faculty and staff members, and President Tim Foster, will select the two winners. The panel will also pick two runners-up. In the event of a tie, the audience will be asked to vote.

Winners, including the runners-up, will receive a prize package valued around $300 that contains gift cards to local businesses, including The Rockslide and Albertson’s. The package inclusion that’s generating the most buzz is a free year-long campus parking pass– a hot commodity when prices are so high.

“If somebody’s a senior, they may think, ‘Why would I want a parking pass for next year?’ Basically, if a senior won, they’d get parking for the rest of this year anywhere on campus, so there’s still a benefit. Otherwise, you could apply it to next year,” Flenniken said.

The PR Club hopes the competition between groups will generate a lot of interest. Though the event is also a fundraiser, the cost is not prohibitive. Admission is $5 but students and staff with a valid ID can get in for $3.
