The Mesa State wrestling team ended its regular season on a down note, losing two of three matches last week. Thursday night the Mavericks started off their double-header against Grand Canyon University. The Mavericks had a rough time against GCU, who is ranked 7th nationally, losing the match 30-6. Trevor Donarski and Jon Gappmaier were the only bright spots for the Mavs, picking up wins at 149 lbs and 157 lbs.
“We’ve really struggled with top 10 schools this year,” coach Chuck Pipher said.
In the second match of the night the Mavs took on Fort Hays State University, winning the match 27-12. The highlights of the match were the three pins by Shane Miller, Trevor Stapp, and Daniel Romero. Gappmaier, Dylan Granard, and Zak Slotten also picked up victories, all by decision.
Friday Night Mesa State hosted 9th ranked Nebraska-Kearney, losing a one sided battle 37-6. Kearney won nine of the 10 bouts, with Gappmaier picking up the lone Maverick victory by pin, his 15th win of the season. With a dismal 7-9 season in the rear view mirror, the Mavs will try to look ahead to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Regionals. Miller, who missed Friday night’s match due to a sprained MCL, is looking to return to Regionals fully recovered.
“We are all trying to just get healthy and prepare for Regionals and hopefully have a much better showing,” Miller said.
The RMAC Regionals start February 26th in San Francisco.
